How to Start Blogging in 2025: Is Blogging the Tough Truth?

Over the past year, the blogging industry has undergone major changes that have put many people's careers on hold. Long-time bloggers who have been in the industry for years have seen their websites shut down and their sources of income dry up. Don't believe me? Let's take a look at some examples of bloggers who have been active for over 10 years and now have their websites shut down. Their sources of income are gone. I'm not saying that blogging as a career is completely over. But some traditional blogging methods no longer work.

I previously had several websites that I monetized primarily through AdSense. My strategy was to collect a ton of keywords, outsource a ton of content creation (often not professionally created), and publish it. This repeatable process worked for nearly every website. But today, this approach of creating a ton of websites and monetizing them no longer works. Unfortunately, most people won't tell you this directly, but it's true. This process is outdated and should be avoided.

Should I start a blog in 2025?

The answer to this question becomes clear when you understand the current reality of blogging. Previously, Google search results showed websites with the best organic content. Featured snippets and top rankings gave recognition to content that provided great answers.

When you search for anything today, AI-generated summaries make up the majority of the results. Trusted, established websites like Dawn, Jang and other long-standing names are then ranked higher as they have built trust over the years.

If you are looking for something that these trusted sites don't cover, Reddit often comes up on top. Similarly, platforms like Quora and other user-generated content sites are now also given priority in search rankings. This change makes it very difficult for new bloggers to rank their websites in Google search results.

Blogging as a full-time career in the future?

Blogging is no longer viable as a full-time career. The dynamic nature of the industry makes it hard to keep up, no matter how many paid courses you take. For example, previous strategies such as using expired domains to create a credible website for ranking are no longer effective. Even if you rank a new website today, there is no guarantee that it will stay there.

If you want to blog, treat it as a side hustle or hobby, not a full-time job. This way, you can invest your time and energy more wisely.

The Right Way to Blog in 2025

When starting a blog, focus on a niche category instead of a broad one. Gone are the days when blogs about news, entertainment, and job opportunities made millions of dollars. Nowadays, it is important to choose a thoroughly researched niche.

For example, if you create content for a specific query and the AI summary meets the user's needs, no one will visit your website. The goal is to choose a niche that the AI cannot fully satisfy, and entice users to visit your site for a detailed answer.

It is also important to optimize your website. Ensure fast loading speeds, regular backups and crash-free pages. A reliable hosting service is essential here. I personally recommend Hostinger because it is affordable and offers a free SSL certificate, custom email, and a free domain with one year of hosting. You can also host over 100 websites with the basic plan, and automatic backups protect your data in case of a crash. Plus, Hostinger offers 24/7 customer support, which is invaluable.

Write quality content

Now that AI can generate great content, many bloggers are taking advantage of it. But don't rely solely on AI. Create value-driven content that provides real benefit to your audience. Without added value, your content won't rank and won't effectively engage users. Properly structure, optimize, and publish articles that offer real solutions.

Building Legitimacy and Presence on Multiple Platforms

Legitimacy is key to the continued success of your blog. Websites and platforms that are recognized as a brand consistently perform better. For example, my own platform continues to grow because I have built trust and credibility over time. Don't rely solely on one platform for traffic, diversify your content across multiple channels. When starting a blog, focus on blogging for the long term, rather than expecting instant results in a few months. Once your blog has generated some traffic, consider multiple ways to monetize instead of relying solely on ads.

Monetize your skills beyond blogging

Even if your website isn't a success, the skills you've gained through blogging, like SEO, website development, and software tools, can open new opportunities. For example, you could offer SEO services to companies as a freelancer or work as a consultant.

After all, blogging isn't just about building a business. It's also about monetizing the skills you've gained along the way. Blogging may not provide a steady income in the long term, but if you have the skills, it can.

Final Thoughts

I'm not here to discourage you, but to give you a realistic picture of the blogging industry today. If you decide to start a blog, dive deep into your chosen niche. Learn skills like SEO, email marketing, digital marketing, etc. thoroughly and consider blogging as a stepping stone to gain valuable skills.
