The competition kicked off earlier in the week with a colorful national costume segment, which ultimately distilled the contestants down to 30 semi-finalists. On Saturday night, the participants displayed their elegance and confidence in swimwear and evening gowns, culminating in the identification of the top five finalists.
Chidimma Adetshina from Nigeria took the title of first runner-up, while Maria Fernanda Beltran of Mexico secured the position of second runner-up. The Miss Universe contest this year achieved numerous milestones. For the first time in its 72-year existence, women aged 28 and older were permitted to participate. Among the competitors was Beatrice Njoya from Malta, who made history as the first woman in her 40s to make it to the grand finale.
Furthermore, the Miss Universe Organization abolished restrictions on pregnant women, mothers, and married participants. These adjustments signify a rising call for inclusivity and modernization within the pageant industry.
This year’s competition welcomed new participants, such as Belarus, Eritrea, and the United Arab Emirates. Of particular significance was Marianela Ancheta’s representation of Cuba, marking the nation’s first appearance at Miss Universe in 57 years.
Nonetheless, the journey to the competition had its challenges. In South Africa, Chidimma Adetshina stepped down from Miss Universe South Africa due to xenophobic backlash and was subsequently selected to represent Nigeria.
