President-elect Donald Trump has selected former Congressman and recent Fox Business host Sean Duffy to serve as the next Secretary of the Department of Transportation.
Sean Duffy represented Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House from 2011 to 2019. After leaving Congress, he became a prominent figure in conservative media, contributing to Fox News in 2020 and later hosting the program The Bottom Line on Fox Business.
On Monday, Trump revealed that Sean Duffy will be appointed the new Secretary of Transportation, describing him as a “brilliant and popular public servant.” Trump commended Duffy's strong communication skills demonstrated during his congressional tenure. He stated that Duffy's priorities would include “Excellence, Competence, Competitiveness, and Beauty” in the enhancement of the nation’s infrastructure.
Trump further noted that Duffy would ensure that ports and dams contribute to economic growth while maintaining national security. Moreover, he pledged that Duffy would enhance air travel safety by eliminating diversity and inclusion policies for pilots and air traffic controllers.
Duffy's final day at Fox Business was Wednesday. He had resigned earlier in the week and subsequently interviewed for the Cabinet position.
Despite Sean Duffy's significant political roles, including serving as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations and being a member of the House Financial Services Committee, he lacks direct experience in the transportation sector. Nonetheless, if he is confirmed by the Senate, he will oversee one of the government's most crucial departments.
The Department of Transportation manages numerous major infrastructure initiatives, which include the construction and upkeep of highways, bridges, airports, and public transit systems. Additionally, it ensures the safety and regulation compliance of air and rail travel, shipping, and pipelines.
Sean Duffy will also be responsible for overseeing projects related to Elon Musk's companies. Musk, a strong supporter of Trump, has recently been appointed to head the new Department of Government Efficiency. Upon receiving his nomination for Transportation Secretary, Duffy stepped down from his role at BGR.
